A Shooting on Campus Today

Or at least we thought for far too long of a time. I was standing in front of a class, having just finished my part of a group presentation, when I got a text message. Normally I would not advise checking your phone while a teacher and 40 people are watching you present but I decided to subtly check, avoiding the teachers gaze. This is what I saw: (And yes, I have a Giraffe as my cell phone background.)

Definitely a moment that catches your attention, I show a friend standing next to me and we exchange concerned glances. From that point on, I don’t remember a single question the teacher asked about our presentation. I happened to be closest to the door and heard a scream in the distance down the hall and immediately started visualizing what I would do if things started to get really exciting. I start thinking, “alright Fox, you have just signed up for the military, trained or not, it would look bad in a headline if you lose this fight.”

Next, I check Twitter. If something is going down, people will be talking. The picture below is what I see.

Class was just ending and we use the computer to check mualert.missouri.edu. It is down due to a surplus of traffic. Perfect, the first time in 4 years it is needed, it fails.

I text my mom the same picture of the initial warning as above and she replied with, “OMG where are you?” I replied, “Went home to get camo, my bow (and arrows) and came back to campus.”

One thing leads to another and we eventually find out it is just a methed out crazy person who shot 4 people, killed 3, and the fourth was airlifted to Columbia. The police assume the shooter would want to go to the “university” hospital to finish her off. And that is how rumors start, with twitter acting like gasoline on a fire.

The ironic part of course, is had this been an actual emergency, I wouldn’t have found out without checking my cell phone in class. Further, the MU alert system is supposed to send out a text message. I think I will pass on turning my phone off for class thank you.

  1. The really frustrating part not mentioned is that no one had a clue how to react. Everyone I was around just froze and when it came out that it was a false alarm, people gave me grief.

By the way, the shooter has not been caught and let's assume for a moment that he did end up on campus, got locked out of the hospital and decided to do something rash--like shoot more innocent people.

The MU police department seemed pissed off that I even called them today when I first heard of the situation. And, to top it all off, the MU notification system has proven to be less effective than two styrofoam cups and a long piece of string.

Mizzou goofed this one. And any student that laughs this off and claims that everyone overreacted needs to consider for a moment what could have been...

  2. MU should let students know what exactly happened. If there is a rumor, the university (or the police) should clarify it in the first place rather than leave everyone in a panic situation. I don't think what happened today is funny. :(
